# Line Item Templates

Line item property templates save bundles of products with their properties, letting you add multiple configured items to a draft order with a single click.

### What are line item property templates?

A line item property template is a saved collection of:

* Product SKUs
* Quantities for each product
* Line item properties for each product

When you apply a template, all items are added to the draft order at once with properties already configured.

### Template configuration options

#### Product selection

Add products to the template:

* Search by product name
* Search by SKU
* Add multiple products
* Remove products you don't want

#### Quantity defaults

Set quantity for each item:

* Fixed numbers (e.g., always 10)
* Variable placeholders (e.g., 1, user adjusts)
* Bulk quantities

{% hint style="success" %}
Set quantity to 1 if it varies per order. It's easier to change one number than to remember to add the product.
{% endhint %}

#### Line item properties

For each product in the template, add properties:

* **Key**: Property name (e.g., "Engraving")
* **Value**: Default value or placeholder (e.g., "\[Customer will provide]")

Properties can be:

* Pre-filled with common values
* Left as placeholders for customization
* Instructions for the person creating the order

#### Customize after applying

After applying a template, you can:

* Change quantities
* Remove items you don't need this time
* Add items not in the template
* Modify line item properties
* Change pricing
* Reorder items

{% hint style="info" %}
Templates are copied when applied, not linked. Changes to the draft order don't affect the template, and editing the template doesn't change existing orders.
{% endhint %}

### Managing templates

#### Edit a template

1. Go to **Line item templates**
2. Click on the template you want to edit
3. Modify products, quantities, or properties
4. Save changes

{% hint style="warning" %}
Editing a template only affects future uses. Draft orders where you've already applied the template keep their original values.
{% endhint %}

#### Duplicate a template

To create a variation:

1. Find the template to duplicate
2. Click **Duplicate** or **Copy**
3. A copy is created with "(Copy)" in the name
4. Edit the copy to make your variation
5. Rename it appropriately

#### Delete a template

1. Go to **Line item templates**
2. Find the template to delete
3. Click **Delete** or trash icon
4. Confirm deletion

{% hint style="warning" %}
Deleted templates cannot be recovered. Make sure you don't need it anymore before deleting.
{% endhint %}

### Best practices

#### Template naming

Use descriptive names that indicate:

* What's in the template
* When to use it
* Who it's for (if customer-specific)

Good names:

* "Standard Welcome Kit"
* "Premium Service Package"
* "ACME Corp - Monthly Reorder"
* "Custom Mug - Options Template"
* "Holiday Gift Set 2026"

Poor names:

* "Template 1"
* "Stuff"
* "Products"

#### Property placeholders

For variable fields, use clear placeholders:

✅ **Good placeholders:**

* "\[Customer will provide]"
* "\[8x10 / 11x14 / 16x20]" (options)
* "\[Ask customer for size]" (instruction)
* "\[Optional - leave blank if not needed]"

❌ **Poor placeholders:**

* "TBD"
* "???"
* "xxx"

#### Organizing templates

If you have many templates, use naming prefixes:

* **By customer**: "ACME - ", "CustomerXYZ - "
* **By category**: "Service - ", "Product - ", "Gift - "
* **By season**: "2026 Summer - ", "Holiday - "

**Examples:**

* "ACME - Monthly Reorder"
* "Service - Gold Package"
* "Gift - Corporate Set"
* "2026 Summer - Promo Bundle"

#### Regular maintenance

Review templates quarterly:

* Remove templates for discontinued products
* Update quantities based on new norms
* Add newly released products
* Archive old seasonal templates

### Advanced uses

#### Multiple templates per order

You can apply multiple templates to one draft order:

1. Apply first template (e.g., "Standard Kit")
2. Apply second template (e.g., "Add-on Services")
3. Both sets of items are added
4. Adjust as needed

This works well for modular offerings.

#### Version control

Maintain template versions for price changes:

* "Service Package - 2026 Pricing"
* "Service Package - 2025 Pricing"

Keep old versions for reference or grandfather pricing.

#### Customer-specific variations

Create templates for each customer's unique needs:

* "CustomerA - Standard Order"
* "CustomerA - Bulk Order"
* "CustomerA - Sample Order"

Saves time on recurring customer orders.

### Troubleshooting

#### Template won't save

* Check that all products still exist in your catalog
* Verify property keys and values aren't too long
* Ensure template has a name
* Try refreshing the page

#### Product missing when template applied

* Product may have been deleted from Shopify catalog
* Check if product is archived
* Verify SKU still exists
* Edit template to remove or replace the product

#### Properties not appearing

* Make sure you saved properties when creating template
* Check that property keys are valid
* Try recreating the property in the template
* Verify no special characters causing issues

#### Can't find my template

* Check that you're in "Line item templates" not "Attribute templates"
* Use search if available
* Verify template wasn't accidentally deleted
* Check if using the right store (if you manage multiple)
